Many new commercial data management software tools eliminate the need for system developers to write complex code for data access and translation and allow them to easily access virtually all data sources through a single interface. The software tools typically consist of modeling tools and query tools:

Modeling tools are used to import or create descriptions of databases (physical metadata) and to then build a metamodel. An enterprise's complete data resources, including relationships among elements and keys on the same or disparate data sources, are stored in a single location (repository). A single repository makes possible a unified view of all information assets across an enterprise, enabling anyone to query any or all information sources in real time. The models in the repository are available for use and reuse by multiple applications.
Query tools enable the metamodels to be queried as if they were real databases, thus creating a virtual centralized database (or a virtual data warehouse). These tools decompose user queries from any client application, determines the data sources to be contacted, and constructs the atomic queries needed to run on the hosts containing the data.

Data management creates business value when data integration, data migration, and the creation of new products and services, e.g., Web services, can be accomplished without having to rearchitect legacy or silo systems. New applications can be developed using existing models, virtually eliminating the information integration stage of development, and thereby shortening application development cycle time and reducing costs.
