Iknow's larger KM projects typically follow four distinct phases; these phases are illustrated in Exhibit 4.

Phase 1: Strategy. In the Strategy Phase, Iknow identifies the important business issues and elicits and refines the business requirements for the KM initiative. Working jointly with the project team and key stakeholders, Iknow then defines a "future state" vision. The gap between current state and future state provides the basis for understanding the sources of value of the KM initiative, and the business benefits are quantified and summarized in a business case. The Strategy Phase is completed when the business case is accepted by senior management and resources are approved for Phase 2.
Phase 2: Solution Design and Development. The Solution Design and Development Phase involves the creation of a comprehensive, holistic solution involving all five elements of Iknow's Solution Approach. The primary outputs from this Phase are detailed designs for the knowledge processes, pilot and prototype results (used to test and refine the solution designs), and recommendations in the knowledge content, technology, and organization change management areas. High-level system requirements are developed based on the technology recommendations.
Phase 3: System Design and Development. Phase 3 involves preparing the detailed system requirements and developing the software components that make up the final system. The components usually consist of both commercial software packages and custom development. Package customization and data and application integration are also completed during this Phase. Phase 3 ends when the new system passes comprehensive unit, integration, and function testing.
Phase 4: Organizational Change. Organizational change management activities are implemented during this Phase. These activities are typically quite varied and may involve job design/redesign, training, and the development of reward and recognition programs. System launch and roll-out happen during this Phase. System maintenance and initial enhancements may also occur during Phase 4.
Exhibit 4 shows some overlap between the Phases, indicating that activities within the different phases often are performed in parallel.
Iknow breaks each of these Phases down into sets of smaller, more manageable projects and/or work streams. This disaggregation helps us and our clients better monitor and track project status and mitigate risks because each of the smaller projects has its own workplan, project team, and list of specific outputs. These smaller or focused KM projects tend to address specific business or technical issues. Please see the Consulting Services Section for a list of representative projects that align with each of the Phases.
